Rights Respecting Schools

At Ysgol Bryn Castell, our core vision is "Together we can achieve." We believe that every child deserves a safe, nurturing, and happy environment to reach their full potential.

To support this commitment, we are continually reinforcing our Silver RRSA Award and embedding the UNICEF UK Rights Respecting Schools Award (RRSA) into our school ethos, policies, and daily classroom practice.

What is a Rights Respecting School?

The UNICEF UK initiative helps schools put the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) at the absolute heart of their culture. This values-based framework ensures that our pupils are recognised as active rights-holders, empowering them to become resilient, empathetic, and confident citizens.

By participating in this programme, our entire "YBC Family"—including pupils, staff, parents, and carers—works together to build an environment rooted in equality, dignity, and mutual respect.

How We Put Rights into Action at YBC

  • A Safe & Nurturing Environment: We prioritise the health, safety, and emotional well-being of our young people, ensuring they feel secure enough to re-engage with learning.
  • Empowering the Pupil Voice: We actively listen to our learners, ensuring their choices, ideas, and voices shape our school community and decisions.
  • Tailored & Inclusive Learning: We provide a stimulating curriculum that values independent thought and allows every pupil’s unique talents to thrive.
  • Healthy Relationships: We model rights-respecting language to resolve conflicts positively and foster constructive, supportive social networks.

The Three Pillars of Our RRS Journey

Through the UNICEF RRSA framework, we focus on three measurable outcomes:

  1. Teaching and Learning ABOUT Rights: Making sure our pupils understand their civil, economic, social, and cultural rights.
  2. Teaching and Learning THROUGH Rights: Creating classroom environments where children are safe, respected, and accepted.
  3. Teaching and Learning FOR Rights: Encouraging our young people to advocate for themselves and speak up for the rights of others globally
